Working group activities

The currently active WGs are

WG12.5 Knowledge-Oriented Development of Applications
WG12.6 Intelligent Information Management

Both WGs, in particular WG 12.5, participated in the preparation of the conference International Conference On Intelligent Information Processing (IIP-2000). The conference is designed to be a forum for TC12 WG activities and offers the following tracks:

Track 1: Intelligent Information Management
Track 2: Knowledge-Based System Architecture
Track 3: Distributed Intelligence

Events

31.8.98 - 4.9.98 IT&KNOWS Conference (Information Technology & Knowledge Systems) as part of WCC-1998
21.8 - 25.8.2000 IIP-2000 Conference (International Conference On Intelligent Information Processing) as part of WCC-2000 in Beijing

Publications

Proceedings of IT&KNOWS Conference

A book project based on IT&KNOWS contributions is underway (eds. J. Cuena and J. Treur).

Progress and status

The efforts to restructure TC12 have continued. Several valuable new representatives joined the TC.

Much of the work in the last half year was directed towards the TC12 conference IIP-2000 with WCC-2000 in Beijing. A sometimes controversial discussion about the track organisation could be concluded with a compromise.

REPORT TO TA

WG 12.2 Machine Learning:

The terms of the WG chair and cochair have expired in 1998. New candidates have not been proposed. Activities have not been reported in 1998. There has been communbication with Pavel Brazdil, Vice-Chair of WG 12.2, who prefers not to be reelected due to other obligations but suggests continuation of the WG.

TC chair agrees that Machine Learning is an important topic playing a part in several modern IT areas and applications (e.g. Data Minig, Neural Networks). However, it is advisable to restructure the WG following the ideas for the future of TC12 put forth in the last meetings. Hence TC chair proposes to suspend WG 12.2 in order to allow a new definition of the aims and scope and to obtain an active WG leadership.
