7. Publications

Publication of TC6 event proceedings with Kluwer has experienced difficulties that have been reported to the IFIP President, Executive Board and IFIP Secretariat, together with the results of internal discussions in TC6 about this issue.

In particular, in Middleware’98 and HPN’98 there were problems with Kluwer publication that required last minute alternative solutions from the Conference Organisers. The Organisers indicated to TC6 that they were deeply concerned with the IFIP solution for publication.

As reported directly to IFIP, there are aspects in the IFIP-Kluwer contract that are of concern to book editors and that, in some cases, have already led the Conference organisers to look for alternative solutions.

8. TC6 meeting attendance

Since the last report there was only one TC6 meeting (Tozeur, Tunisia). It was attended by 16 delegates plus two guests.

TC6 had requested in the last IFIP GA for the nomination of TC6 delegates from the following countries: Brazil, Israel, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Thailand, Argentina, Ireland, Korea, Singapore, Russia and Egypt.

Unfortunately, no nomination was done until this moment. TC6 would like to request to the IFIP GA delegates a more active help in looking for national delegates for the Technical Committees.

TC6 also requests to the Australia Computer Society to nominate a new delegate to TC6, because its representative has not attended TC6 meetings in the last four years.

Part II

  1. New name for WG 6.10
  2. Working Group 6.10 (Photonic Networking Communications) proposes to update its name into "Photonic Networking".

  3. Updated aims and scope

The aims and scope of TC6 (Communication Systems) were updated as follows:

AIMS
The Aims of the Committee are:

1. to promote the international exchange of information related to communication systems;

2. to bridge gaps existing between users, telecommunication operators, service providers, and computer and equipment manufacturers;

3. to establish working contracts with international bodies concerned with data communication, such as ITU, ETSI, ISO, IEEE, IETF, ITC and ATM Forum.

SCOPE
The Scope of its work includes all aspects of communication systems, such as research on and design, manufacture and operation of products, systems, concepts and architectures related to information exchange.

Some examples of areas of special interest are:

TC6 requests the IFIP Technical Assembly to approve these aims and scope.
