Memorandum
TAB 9DATE:
August 26, 1998The Portuguese Information Processing Society (API) could overcome the worst period of its existence and is slowly recovering its national and international activity.
On August 98, sent an application request to CEPIS and ECDL, as full member. The society intends to start promoting the ECDL "driving licenses" on 1999.
The API organized the "National Olympiads in Informatics" for youngsters, aged between 13 and 20 years old, whose 10th annual event occurred April last. The first four players will compete for the 10th "International Olympiads in Informatics" (IOI 98).
The IOI 98 will be held from SEP.5-12, in Setúbal (Portugal), and are being organized by API. They are expecting around 600 people from 70 countries.
The Computer Society is promoting an annual information technology fair ("INFORPOR"), that this year (15th edition) will run in Lisbon, from October the 22nd to the 25th.
Regarding the IFIP relationship, our society is revising the nominations of some TC delegates, namely TC2, TC7 and TC11. Our delegates promoted one IFIP Conference in Portugal, during this calendar year:
TC6 - INDC98 June 19-21, 1998 Aveiro
The meeting was co-sponsored by IFIP and ICCC, had around 140 participants (100 full paying), from 17 countries, and was considered as a major success.
Due to the current uncertainty regarding the IFIP publishing agreements, the proceedings were published under the ISBN of Aveiro University Press and ICCC Press.
