INFORMATION PROCESSING SOCIETY OF JAPAN (IPSJ)
IFIP FULL MEMBER SOCIETY REPORT

August, 1999

1. Recent Status

- After regulation of the IFIP Committee was approved at the ISPJ Board of Executive Directors meeting on September 1997, the IFIP activities became independent from International Committee. Since that time, more positive activities have commenced, the IFIP Committee meeting was held three times and Mr.Ejiri from IAPR and Mr.Higuchi from JEIDA became new members of the Committee.

A summary of IPSJs activities since September 1998.

IPSJ successfully held a symposium called IFIP Report-WCC98 at the 58th National Convention of IPSJ in Tokyo in March 1999.
IPSJ had a discussion with JEIDA(Japan Electronic Industry Development Association) in May 1998, in order to consider to establish a close relationship between IFIP and Japanese industry. This discussion was on going, and IFIP Council in India in March 1999, approved of JEIDAs participation in the TC/WGand now JEIDA is under consideration to select.
IPSJ is now encouraging industry and universities to participate in WCC2000.
The introduction of IAPR was reported in the IPSJ Journal in February 1999,and let more than 26,000 IPSJ members know.

2. Activity Policy of the new IFIP Committee

The IFIP Committee activities will be conducted under the following basic policy.

To positively promote TC activities and to improve international visibility
To establish a feedback system, from the achievement of TC activities to information processing research in Japan
To strengthen incentives in order to encourage positive participation to TC activity
To propose a new theme of TC from Japan, and selectively strengthen the theme
To strengthen the relationship between IFIP and industry

With the above policy, the IFIP Committee will make an effort to establish a "feedback system" .The basic policy mentioned in the above section will be steadily achieved through regular symposium activities held at the IPSJ National Convention, regular publication of the IFIP activities in the IPSJ journal, and establishment of a strong relationship with JEIDA (Japan Electronic Industry Development Association).

3. Review of Activities
3.1 Membership Update (as of June 30, 1999)

3.2 Publications

"Joho Shori" (monthly journal in Japanese): average 140 pages, 27,280 copies
"Transactions of IPSJ" (monthly transactions, most papers in Japanese): average 220 pages, 6,000 copies

3.3 Special Interest Groups

There are 29 Special Interest Groups (SIGs), totally 10,583 members registered.
One hundred and twenty-four study meetings for SIGs were held.

4. Input to IFIP

For supporting WCC2000, announcements were made in the IPSJ journal and Web site to urge IPSJ members to participate in the Congress.

It was reported that Mr. N. Takahashi (Representative of TC3) was relieved by Mr. H. Ohiwa.

Dr. T. Miura, Trustee of IFIP and Japanese representative of IFIP, attended the GA in Wien 1998 and Council in India 1999.

Dr. T. Miura, Trustee of IFIP was elected as a Trustee of IFIP again at the GA in Wien 1998.
